Our Story

Ponting Wines is a collaboration between one of Australia’s most celebrated cricketers, Ricky Ponting and Ben Riggs, an award-winning Australian winemaker known for uncompromising, high quality wines. Masters of their craft, their partnership has been forged to celebrate their dedication and achievements.

Each wine reflects Ricky’s life and has been carefully crafted by Ben to ensure flavour, structure and complexity are of the highest quality.

Ponting 366 is the pride of the collection, an extraordinary wine that celebrates Ricky Ponting’s extraordinary career. A testimony to 168 Tests, 13,378 runs and 41 magnificent centuries. Ben has crafted a classically Australian blend of Shiraz and Cabernet from the famous regions of McLaren Vale and the Coonawarra to create a wine that will stand the test of time.

The Tasmanian Chardonnay and the Mowbray Boy Pinot Noir are born from Ricky’s love of Tasmania. These wines acknowledge his family heritage and his formative years at the Mowbray Cricket Club as a child protege, who would one day captain his country.

The Pinnacle McLaren Vale Shiraz honours the most famous of all cricket battles, the Ashes. Ricky’s career against England was uncompromising, with no quarter asked or given of his opponents, from 35 tests played, he captained 18, scored eight centuries and 2,476 test runs.

The Close of Play Langhorne Creek Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine of great character and style. A wine that acknowledges the special moments with teammates and the tradition of raising a glass with team mates at the close of play and is the perfect “Finale” for any get together.

Ponting Wines is a celebration of Ben and Ricky's commitment, dedication and achievements in their chosen crafts.

Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting is one of the most successful cricketers of all time.
After making his first-class debut at the age of 17, Ricky went on to become the most successful Australian cricket captain of all time, with results including a five-nil whitewash of England in the 2006/07 Ashes series.
Ricky was a member of three World Cup winning teams including two as captain, and he remains Australia’s leading run scorer in Test and ODI cricket. He is also the second highest run scorer in overall Test match history and the third highest in ODIs.
Since retiring from playing, Ricky has coached Mumbai Indians to an Indian Premier League championship, and currently coaches the Delhi Capitals in the IPL.
He also assists the Australian T20 and ODI teams when time permits including as an assistant coach to the Australian team in the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England.
These days, Ricky is best known for his insightful commentary both in Australia and in the UK. A key part of the Seven Network commentary team, Ricky will be kept busy this summer commentating on the Ashes Test series as well as the Big Bash League series.
Ricky is also co-founder of Ponting Wines – a passion that celebrates his lifetime of commitment, dedication and achievement.
Off the field, since 2002 Ricky and his wife Rianna have raised in excess of $10 million to help young Australians and their families beat cancer. In 2008 Ricky and Rianna established the Ponting Foundation to provide focus to their fundraising efforts. Ricky’s philanthropic efforts and sporting achievements were recognised in 2012 when Ricky was awarded an Order of Australia honour.

The baggy green cap is the most powerful symbol in Australian sport. Nothing comes close to it for tradition, meaning and representation. Ricky proudly carried test cap number 366 since his debut in 1995. He played 168 tests and always saw The Ashes as the pinnacle of Test cricket.
“Once you get a taste for it, you realise that it doesn’t get any better or bigger than playing Ashes cricket”.

Ricky regards the 2006-07 series as his fondest Ashes memory

“The hunger in the group was phenomenal and our performances just as dominant. The England team in that series was a very good team but they were blitzed by one of the greatest Test teams ever.”
Australia won that series in a 5-0 whitewash, the first since 1920-21.
As the most winning captain in test and one day history, Ricky enjoyed plenty of post match celebration with his team mates
“Raising a glass with team mates at the Close of Play, when the game was done and the crowd was gone, they were the special moments.”
But it isn’t just the success on the field that shows this man's dedication. Intensely private, a proud family man and true Australian gentleman, his determination and focus drove his success from day one. So much of who Ricky has become is based on where he came from. He’s proud of his background growing up in the work-class suburbs of Launceston and the values he was taught in that town and in the dressing room of the Mowbray Eagles Cricket Club. From a small-town upbringing to captaining his country, his journey has been captured in the fabric of Ponting Wines.
Ponting Wines is a celebration of this commitment, dedication and achievements throughout his life. To be enjoyed with family and friends.
